Many Hungarian women still rely on unreliable methods

Sexuality, intimacy is an important part of the life of Hungarian women, more important than in Western European countries. According to the results of the Richter Index for Women, more Hungarian women said they liked their partner (70% vs. 80%) compared to their Western European counterparts, and many people consider their sexual life to be a source of pleasure (73% vs. 62%). True, they are less satisfied with their sexual life (only 60%), but even this ratio is higher than in other countries (56%).

Reliable contraception is an indispensable part of carefree sexual life and conscious family planning, perhaps due to the fact that the Hungarian women interviewed consider choosing the right contraceptive method as the most important gynecological topic. Research has also shown that the right method can influence the quality of sexual life. For example, women who choose a tablet feel more confident in intimate coexistence, with proper protection.

There is still a great need for contraception education

Although the awareness of most contraceptive methods among Hungarian women is somewhat higher than in Western Europe, they are less conscious of use. One third of Hungarian women do not use any methods of contraception at all, and the proportion (15%) of those who rely on such an unreliable method as interrupted intercourse is extremely high in European comparison. The two most widespread methods in Hungary - like Europe - are the condom and contraceptive pill, but the European women prefer the tablet with little difference.

One such area is contraception and related education, which unfortunately is also well illustrated by statistics on pregnancy abortion. Although the rate of abortion in Hungary has declined significantly in recent decades, this figure is still very high in European comparison, ” said Zsuzsa Beke, Head of PR and Government Relations of Gedeon Richter Plc.

“ Unwanted pregnancy is a major psychological burden for women. In the event that a couple is not properly protected during the sexual act, the use of the emergency tablet may be justified, and then the use of a hormonal contraceptive ”, said Tamás Telek, obstetrician and gynecologist.

When it comes to contraception, the gynecologist is the most important opinion leader: every second Hungarian woman chooses the right method based on the expert's opinion. Nearly a quarter of women are influenced by their partner in the election, but many also talk to their friends about this issue. The fourth most important source of information is the Internet, despite the fact that the information there often leads to misconceptions and increases the risk of inappropriate choice.

The type of contraception that you should use is greatly influenced by the individual's condition, age, and health. Therefore, the role of the gynecologist is crucial in finding a contraceptive method that serves individual needs and fits the lifestyle.

“Among the current methods of contraception, the use of hormonal contraceptives is the most effective means of preventing unwanted pregnancy. With the help of family planning, the menstrual cycle can be calculated, the bleeding disorders can be treated , and the abdominal cramps and pains occurring during menstruation can be prevented and significantly reduced, ” said Tamás Telek.
