The voice of the Northern Light was brought to life by Huawei
Huawei created a special art production. With the help of artificial intelligence, the company has transformed the world's most beautiful natural phenomenon, the Northern Light, into a symphonic piece. In the Sound of Light project, the company's engineers and world-renowned composers have created a musical piece accompanied by special visual effects at the Musikverein in Vienna, with the help of the international audience of nearly 300 people, with the help of Mate 20 Pro, the latest high-end device from Huawei.
Huawei's latest international project has presented new perspectives on the use of artificial intelligence (MI). In the Sound of Light, the company, together with renowned musicians, sought to learn how to teach MI to read and produce sounds. The members of the team drew the unique artificial intelligence capabilities of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro smartphone to recognize the main features of light and convert them into musical elements. The Transformed Melodies have created the Symphony of Sound of Light, composed by a renowned composer for music.
Changing the Northern Light to Music
The Northern Light was captured by the Kjetil Skogli hunter in Tromsø, Norway, and sent to the soundtrack of the acclaimed composer Mark Sayfritz. The Symphony of the Northern Light was born with the help of an artificial intelligence system developed for this occasion, and finally came to life thanks to James Shearman, a world-famous British conductor and Synchron Stage Orchestra symphony orchestra.
The Sound of Light organizer and conductor said: “ By creating the symphony, I wanted to convey the feeling of catharsis, an elevated state in which we feel that Northern Light and Artificial Intelligence speak to us through music”.
MI creates new opportunities in composition
The processing of the produced musical elements has so far required the use of high-tech computers, but thanks to the unique MI system, Mate 20 Pro is already capable of supporting such a project. The first stage of realization was the creation of a unique MI environment that recognizes and analyzes the different styles of light. The Artificial Intelligence was then taught to associate the individual musical elements with the video of the Northern Light.
"Artificial Intelligence has opened up new creative opportunities for me in the music scene," said Mark Sayfritz. The composer emphasized that feeding the Northern Light into the MI system can be used to analyze colors, sizes, shapes, and speed. As seen, the system produces different variations of melodies, for example, if the MI detects a particularly dramatic light phenomenon, it can convert the sounds so that they return the intensity of the phenomenon in the piece.
The Mate 20 Pro was not only active in the production of the musical work, but also played an important role during the performance.
The Symphony of the Northern Light was presented to the Synchron Stage Orchestra under the direction of James Shearman in a live audio-visual performance supported by artificial intelligence on 28 November at the Musikverein Brahms in Vienna.
