How to protect our plants in the garden from storms

The fronts come and go, which take a toll on even the healthy human body, let alone the sick, children, and elderly. At least we can escape to the safety of our home from the elements, but not our plants in the garden.

Strong gusts are especially dangerous for taller plants and shrubs. Gale force winds can easily topple or snap branches – giving us work too – which can cause significant damage.

Rain is necessary, but too heavy and large amounts of precipitation are no longer necessary, because not only does it water the soil, but so much water can accumulate that it can no longer drain. This can certainly stress the root systems of the plants. Excessive water can lead to root rot and plant death.

Hail is an unexpected phenomenon that can cause huge damage to our valuables, but plants can also be damaged. Pieces of ice can crush branches and break off leaves.

Lightning strikes are not only terrifying, but also dangerous. The lightning striking the plant is so strong that it can destroy the plant tissues and the heat generated by the lightning can also cause destruction.

Intense rains and windstorms together can cause erosion in the soil, which can damage the root system of plants and their stability.

Protection

Plants planted in pots, crates, or tubs are in the best position, because if we know a storm is coming, we just move them to a safe place. If it is not so easy to move the plants, then it is necessary to fix these larger ones. Use stakes for support.

The well-equipped and caring gardener can purchase a so-called storm apron for his large and difficult-to-move, but feared plants. This solution is easy and quick to use and can be applied to the plant immediately before the storm. It also protects plants from strong gusts of wind and ice.

In the case of brakes and bushes, moving them is out of the question, so the best protection for them is to cut back the branches.

It is worth paying attention to the weather report and you can develop a protection strategy in advance accordingly. It doesn't hurt to secure household items on the terrace, balcony, or garden even before the storm so that they cannot be picked up by the wind and hit something. This way we can also protect our values.
